“For millennia our ancestors gathered around their campfires and homely hearths, whose crackling flames and radiating warmth gifted comfort and wonder. Its influence shaped our evolution, its links to human psychology and wellbeing run deep. The Hearth Observatory seeks to explore this relationship, between human and flame, in a natural setting at the extremes of habitation.


In a volcanic crater on Ambrym Island, cantilevering over the lava lake near its mountainous peak, sits The Hearth Observatory. This off-grid habitation lands on a minimal footprint and invites occupants to connect with Earth’s fiery heart, bubbling up from deep below. Responding to its surroundings, the structure’s enclosure consists of a ceramic heatshield and cooling thermosiphon system. This is tapped for passive energy, while mitigating extreme heat and allowing one to live freely in a location hostile to life. At one end, facing down into the burning maelstrom, a single oculus establishes a powerful and unique relationship: a comfortable interior space juxtaposing the extreme environment raging outside. Looking through this aperture, a molten vista dances, with waves of heat and light kissing one’s skin and painting the walls. The interaction is melodic, the observer entranced, echoing the hearths of our past.”&#38;nbsp;

Theatre for the first humans was the flicker of shadows on cave walls and the sky. The calm that this light brings is in every person.

“You look at the sky, don’t you?I live in the city, where the sky is hidden.We spend so much time looking down.”1


In response to the rampant accessibility of performances at the fingertips of society is an architecture that yells and kicks then gives you hugs. There
are thousands of events happening around us at all times, from when the tires grip the streets to the waveforms of hibernating beasts underground.
Through a built intervention this energy is amplified.

					
Using a diversity of lenses, this architecture witnesses and listens to it’s environments call. In response - electrical signals are transduced into steel cables, promoted by the resonator that produces an environment in phase.2

					
Lastly the architecture speaks out. It broadcasts the counter-frequency in the airwaves, live. Weather and surrounding happenings affect the response severely, triggering an improvisational performance from environmental inputs.

					
Inputs from the environment are mostly in the form of electromagnetic frequencies. Seismic activity, vibrations from the ground, you
can detect traffic or a construction site nearby.

The form is dictated by various lengths of
sound waves that resonate in phase when activated by tuned steel cables.

	During the 2020 pandemic, societies evolved a new level of dependence on the internet. It has enabled attention harvesting through addictive software, polarization through filter bubbles, and powerful etiquette transformations.
Objects that occupy physical weight in space invite a tactile experience beyond the 2D picture-plane.

Are we aware if and when our attention or behavior is being manipulated?&#38;nbsp; How do we flex power over unseen attention harvesters? &#38;nbsp;These queries serve as a guide and an inspiration as we pursue our modern faith in our choreographed lives.
In the culmination of global capitalism, modern computational technology, and the harvesting of vast amounts of behavioral data, surveillance capitalism was born. Made of coded algorithms and fueled with personal data, these digital agents have succeeded in
behavioral manipulation based on identifying moods, locations, and desires of their users. They reward their captive audience with
shallow dopamine spurts that quickly crash and emotionally reverse, triggering addictive dependencies through digital tools such as
the smartphone. These mana fields represent the attention, care, and energy that surrounds us.

The effects of social media were examined as a platform of attention harvesting and behavior manipulation, enforcing divisiveness
and misinformation in the present day United States. ’We Need to Talk’ prototyped architectural responses that aim to counter
polarizing digital forces. This project is modeled as interactive furniture embedded with commoning catalysts and social cues.

Rather than tapping into our vulnerable reactive intelligence, the designs seek to promote our reflective and deep intelligences,
encouraging curiosity through interaction, and elevating wisdom over efficiency. The design project aims to exploit pressure points
of addictive software through participation, space, and a questioning of reductions. The interventions have the ability to grow into
the fabric of the neighborhood, influencing social routines and fostering a neighborhood commons.


					In reference to ancient human comforts, a campfire invites all to gather and share the attention of one another.

The Orb is designed and fabricated as a public infrastructure that provides a social gathering space or modern hearth, heat distribution within thermally active outdoor
furniture, and a neighborhood bread oven. The warm thermal mass and anamorphic optical lenses draw public curiosity. The 400lb
object cultivates an atmosphere that cannot be reproduced digitally.

dependent on a temperature differential within the regulation tank. The steel coil embedded within the fire heats and draws pressure
from the closed loop system, circulating hot water throughout the thermally active furniture.&#38;nbsp;

Thermally conductive materials of aluminum and copper are fused with insulative concrete with high thermal mass, enabling the participant to feel kinesthetic energy change through interactions.

Cast aluminum is lagged into insulative concrete to create conductive warm spots on the furniture. Two alumnium hands are used as handles for the removable lid.

Shaped bodily cues invite a platonic relationship between body and object. The
prototypes reference technologies used prior to the information age that offer intimate energy-transfer processes through water,
steam, heat and electricity. The materials chosen were driven by thermal conductivity attributes, physical body cues, and their
curiosity value- for conversation sparks.

The brick is cut in an icosahedron structure of hexagons and pentagons. Two magnified lenses extend into the fire through steel
shafts with accompanying custom brackets, protected from the interior by high heat ceramic glass. The exterior shell is composed of
a refractory concrete mixture of volcanic rock aggregate, fireclay, and fine silica sand.

	“all terrain mobile rig and media tent for indoor creatures to go and get outdoorsy. the project is a response to the flatness and interiority of the current digital experience. the rig was put together in one day by reusing parts from prior projects and materials found on a construction dumpster over a month-long scavenge. inspired in equal parts by film production tents and the unique joy of outdoor movie theaters. it pairs digital infrastructures like wi-fi and game consoles with an architectural tent/rig. the project aims to break the binaries between the indoor / flat / solo experience of the digital and the natural / immersive / often group experience of the outdoors to create an architecture for dual experiences and possible combinations. the rig includes an indoor/outdoor sink, a shower area, a lofted murphy bed, a sitting area and a birdwatching perch. blurring the lines between tent and architecture, indoor and outdoor activities, sheltered and not... the proposed tent-rig challenges us to engage with some natural elements while receiving protection from others. it’s assembly begins by looking at materials that are around, using an aluminum scaffolding as base structure onto which all found or otherwise available materials are added onto. creating something like a post-natural shelter that questions what are the essentials that we seek from our built environments and what are the resources we have around to satisfy those needs. the rig can be easily moved, to take it outside and runs on a solar powered generator and includes a wifi router so one friend can play animal crossing while another friend is sitting nearby actually fishing.”

		<description>co-co: a detroit housing collective (2020)

					Coco is a mixed-used mixed-income housing proposal focusing on the integration of social, economic, environmental and cultural endeavors.
The project features 216 units, spread
across the site in 7 buildings, the project mixes community courtyards with vibrant street
corridors filled with a range of public amenities. With a focus on passive design in tandem
with prefabricated construction methodologies, this project promotes diverse communities
that are also environmentally conscious. This project seeks to promote diversity through
hyperlocal density and appropriate-able infrastructure to build a strong sense of community
for the future residents, neighbours and citizens of Detroit.

	Site StrategyThe site is located in the historical and culturally significant area of Grand River Avenue and Oakman Blvd, where the orginal Sears Headquarters once stood. The site is divided into strips that link East to West, parallel
to Grand River Avenue. To increase the site accessibility from the corridors of the site, we decided to carve out the massings for neighborhood. While splitting the strips up, some are joined to form smaller enclosures, forming two different building types, C-shaped
Courtyard and Strip, that could be repeated across the site. In both of these building types, the ground floor is used for public and
private amenities atop a concrete podium, while the modularly constructed housing is located above. To accommodate diverse uses, the ground
floor is designed to have an open floor plan with a higher ceiling height. The plan aims to co-locate
collective amenities in the physical environment for convenience and closer proximity, bringing different groups of people together in
a natural way. It is achieved through a rain garden, permeable ground surfaces and bioswales at lower points of the site by the newly designed Joe
Louis Greenway, a 17.5 mile access path connecting city neighborhoods.

Communal Amenities

	
In addition to the development of affordable housing, COCO’s site plan involves a range of public amenities and programming, from large to smaller scales, with community-focused initiatives including education programs, commercial development projects, and community greening efforts. The site transitions from public to more resident focused program space, from Grand River Avenue into the neighborhood.
 

The Grand River Public Hub, offset from Grand River Blvd, acts as a public interface for the site, inhabiting larger programs such as food courts and markets. Further north the programs localize into creative spaces, social support spaces, and local production uses. The two northern C-shaped buildings function as community hubs, with local programming such as health care, child care, cafes, grocery stores.
Tapping into its adjacency to the Joe Louis Greenway, the eastern strip buildings become creative production hubs, co-working spaces for local entrepreneurs, art and cultural spaces, theatres, recording studios, creative spaces, kitchen incubators, food hubs and food banks. The exposure to the pedistrian traffic on the greenway, together with the welcoming social infrastructure helps create a community node in the neighborhood.

Designing a medium-rise building for visual connectivity to the street, the buildings considering light, shadows, and exposure to the southern light condition. With a highly neighborhood accessible ground level, private courtyards are created within the building through the staggered stacked module for smaller scale communities. Modular units are configured to maximize the surface area of exposure to southern solar lighting, while ensuring appropriate fenestration.

The modular units are configured to enable the apartments to have direct sunlight on at least one face. Overhang awnings, translucent glass screens and perforated metal screens are installed to provide shade and privacy.

We conducted design iterations based on 16x32’ CTL volumetric modules, as we determined modular housing as the most economical form of construction that would save time and costs. Establishing 8 different unit types through adjacent relationships of modules, the stacking of these modules enables a variety of roofing conditions, creating active circulation spaces and pathways, ajoined outdoor decks for neighbors to gather, and private outdoor decks for residents.

The University of Michigan Biological Station offers a vast expanse of post-tampered ecosystems from industrial era clear-cut forests to stream lab facilities.
In pursuit of more ecosystem integration with other living things, this proposition proposes a network of
architectural interventions that offer predictive climate simulations while reassessing our human role in
ecosystems.

The project began with many sets of study models using plaster and various conductive metals. Cast masses are embedded with a radiant heat source of hot piping. These warm masses are permeable, encouraging speedy ecosystem incorporation within their environments. Two major forms emerged from these studies, embedded cylindrical piping and a horizontal slab stack that uses language of reinforced concrete construction on efficiency driven human buildings like parking structures.

The cast slabs are networked together with embedded radiant piping, allowing the temperature of the slabs to fluctuate, influencing their environment and its habitants and simulating a warmer or cooler micro-climate in the high moisture landscape of the gorge. The ground, water, and air are affected and produce a wide array of unpredictable conditions involving steam, condensation and freezing. There is a large amount of snow that gathers in the winter months. Patches of the ground prevented from freezing would affect all layers of the ecosystem. The process would generate valuable data for how our ecosystems will respond to future conditions.


The outpost features minimal human amenities. New forms of building envelope are explored in this open structure. An open air bathroom and sink gives enough privacy to hide from passing deer. Glass slabs are embedded within the hot concrete landform, allowing earth to spill over and extend the bank over the flood plain.&#38;nbsp;Heatsink bridges allow dry circulation across the current while convection currents generated from the radiant masses provide necessary comforts for the temporary
occupant.  

				
The aerial mass features electric solar power and embedded piezo microphones that monitor vibration and activity. Neighboring the mass are remote phototaxis insect feeders. Many organisms can be influenced by light stimulus. This feature can be used to encourage insect feeding populations and draw away the intense mosquito population that the site hosts in the summer months.

The earthworm temple was prototyped.
This ground mass or “earthworm temple” can be used to influence ground life and encourage certain species. Currently, earthworms are considered an invasive species in the area and are unhealthy for the forest floor. Vertical circulation is translated into earthworm navigation - a solid mass of earth where tunnels can be carved. Slabs provide elevated views for the earthworms to expand their perspective beyond underground. The cardboard acts as void space inbetween the slabs and would ideally be removed by the earthworms, which they are attracted to. For the sake of time and design, the cardboard was burned.

This micro house was originally constructed hastily for Pittsburgh steel worker housing. The new design was on a tight budget. The
stairwell was removed and replaced with stacked open landings, maximizing the circulation experience in a dwelling with many
stairs. All ceilings were stretched to the maximum heights, influenced by the existing roof structure. The full width of the house was
activated as much as possible, and double sliding glass doors open the previously cramped living spaces.
